چکیده

The influence of reflections on the operation of the 2 MW, CW 170 GHz coaxial cavity gyrotron oscillating in the TE34,19 mode is studied. In particular, frequency-independent power reflections, e.g. from plasma or some elements of the transmission line, larger than 1% and occurring in a poor phase may lead to oscillation breakdown and should be avoided. Frequency-dependent reflections from a specially designed diamond window influence mode competition, but contract the oscillation region of the operating mode noticeably only under the unrealistic assumption that all reflected power returns to the cavity. The conclusion is that the gyrotron is sufficiently robust against possible negative effects related to reflections. PACS numbers: 52.50.Sw, 84.40.Ik

Experimental study of a 1.5-MW, 110-GHz gyrotron oscillator

A detailed experimental study is presented of a 1 MW, 170 GHz gyrotron oscillator whose design is consistent with the ECH requirements of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) for bulk heating and current drive. This work is the first to demonstrate that megawatt power level at 170 GHz can be achieved in a gyrotron with high efficiency for plasma heating applications. Maxi...

New trends in gyrotron development

Gyro-devices provide the highest CW or average power of microwaves in centimeter, millimeter and submillimeter wavelength ranges and therefore they are very attractive as microwave sources for many of applications such as plasma fusion, radiolocation, ion sources, telecommunication, technology, spectroscopy and some other. In last years an essential progress in the device development was demons...

Recent activities of ITER gyrotron development in QST

QST is committed to the development of high power RF power sources (or gyrotrons) for plasma heating in fusion devices. Our main activity is the development of 170GHz gyrotron for electron cyclotron resonance heating and current drive (EC H&CD) system of ITER project which requires 20 MW of power injection into fusion plasma. In ITER, 24 sets of 1 MW gyrotrons are planned to be installed of whi...

Notch Filter Options for ITER Stray Gyrotron Radiation

ITER will have multi megawatt gyrotron systems at 170, 120, and potentially at 60 GHz for ECH, current drive, NTM control, start up, and CTS diagnostics. The ITER environment will therefore have significant background levels of stay radiation at these frequencies that can pose a problem to a number of diagnostic systems. Several deep, narrowband reject filter approaches have been examined. Thes...

Progress in ITER Heating and Current Drive System

Recent progress in the R&D and the design work of plasma heating and current drive (H&CD) technologies for ITER are described. The H&CD systems are composed of 20 MW electron cyclotron (EC), 20 MW ion cyclotron (IC) and 33 MW negative ion based neutral beam (N-NB) systems, and design and R&D work continues for plasma commissioning. Significant progress in R&D during the preceding two years has ...
